Rob Canning received degrees from Cardiff University and University College Dublin where he studied with Anthony Powers and Seiorse Bodley. He has attended the Stockhausen Summer school in Kurten, Germany and the Gaudemus Young composers meeting in Appeldorn, the Netherlands. His works have been performed and broadcast in Ireland, Britain, Italy, Canada, Macedonia, Czechoslovakia, Holland and Spain. His compositional output includes chamber, instrumental and electro -acoustic works as well as laptop improvisations and music for theatre and dance.

Awards include: first prize in the composers class of the RTE Musician of the Future Competition (1998); first prize in the New Music for Sligo composition competition (1999) ; the Macaulay Fellowship awarded by the arts council of Ireland to honour excellence in a young creative artist (2001), Wicklow County Council's Emerging Artist Award (2002). His most recent award, the Arts Councils Professional Development Award (2004) has allowed him to commence Doctorate studies in London where he now lives.


Recent commissions include: Garden of the Forking Paths (2003) commissioned by RTE for the for the London Sinfonietta; Mutations (2003) for Ensemble and live electronics commissioned by Concorde with funding from the Arts Council of Ireland; Myriorama (Penelope Sleeps) for ensemble and video commissioned by AIC/CMC/TBP for the 2004 Rejoyce Festival; a sound installation for the National Library of Ireland's Ulyssess exhibition; he has recently released a CD, Clints&Grikes commissioned by the Barrens Exhibition with funding from the Cultural relations Committee of the Department of Foreign Affairs and is currently touring Canada.

Current projects include a commission for the RTÉ National Chamber Choir to be premiered and toured in spring 2005 and a commission for Wexford County Council's Percent for Art Public Art Scheme.


He has lectured in composition in the music department of Trinity College, Dublin and has also given workshops in composition and computer music. His main research interest focuses on computer assisted performance strategies.

Sound Installation for The Barrens Project shall start / be premiered in Newfoundland, Canada in April and subsequently tour Canada and Ireland 2004 / 2005.

Received commission to write a work for small ensemble, electronics and video for the 2004 Bloomsday Festival - Performances: 14 - 18 June 2004 Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin.

Residency with London based dancer Rachel Sweeney @ the Irish Institute of Choreography and Dance to explore live electronics, live video + dance combinations.

Commissioned to create time based generative sound installation for the National Library of Ireland for their soon to be opened Ulysess Exhibition
